La Jolla Music Society president and artistic director Christopher Beach introduced Yo-Yo Ma to a sold-out audience at Jacobs Music Center Wednesday as “the world’s greatest cellist,” but Beach may have been understating Ma’s fame.

It’s hard to think of any classical musician who has Ma’s mass appeal, achieved through countless appearances on TV shows (whether the “Colbert Report” or “Sesame Street”) and dozens of recordings showcasing a repertoire ranging from bluegrass to the classics, but also commands the highest regard from the world’s most discriminating musicians.

You could say he is the world’s greatest classical musician.
