A Weekend in Paris: The Salon and The Masquerade

Salons were the cultural and intellectual hub of Paris; open forums for the city’s most creative minds to engage in thought-provoking and often subversive conversations. These events, along with the famed Masquerade balls, were rife with stirring and seductive new ideas, art, literature, and music. The pieces on this program emerged from these glamorous salons and range from the charming piano duo by Debussy and Sarasate’s devilishly virtuosic Carmen Fantasy to Ravel and Caplet’s decadent and macabre evocations of Edgar Allan Poe’s story The Masque of the Red Death.

Inon Barnatan
Born in Tel Aviv in 1979, Inon Barnatan started playing the piano at the age of three after his parents discovered he had perfect pitch, and made his orchestral debut at age 11. His musical education connects him to some of the 20th century’s most illustrious pianists and teachers: he studied first with Professor Victor Derevianko, who, himself, studied with the Russian master Heinrich Neuhaus; and in 1997 he moved to London to study at the Royal Academy of Music with Maria Curcio—a student of the legendary Artur Schnabel—and with Christopher Elton.
