La Jolla Music Society continues this Season’s Celebrity Orchestra Series with St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra led by conductor Yuri Temirkanov.
The internationally recognized St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra carries a reputation as a “magnificent musical machine” (The Boston Globe) which sets the standard for Russian repertoire. The orchestra’s San Diego program will include Rossini’s Overture to “The Barber of Seville”, Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in G Minor and Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 in E Minor. Violinist Vilde Frang joins the orchestra, demonstrating her “beguilingly fresh, personal and poetic touch” (The Times, UK).
“From Russia(ns) With Love: Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev Long for their Homeland”
Musicologist Shanon Zusman explores the genesis and performance history of the two musical landmarks on tonight’s program.
