La Jolla Music Society concludes this Season’s Revelle Chamber Music Series and four-concert Winter Season Residency with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.
The CMS residency at La Jolla Music Society brought four distinctively curated programs by Artistic Directors David Finckel and Wu Han. Their fourth and final program titled “Defining Voices” brings both Artistic Directors David Finckel, cello and Wu Han, piano, with Benjamin Beilman, violin and Richard O’Neill, viola.
“Turning Points and Defining Moments: Beethoven, Faure, and Bohuslav Martin?”
Benjamin Roe investigates how these three works with overt, traceable influences, spurred new innovations and directions for their respective composers. Beethoven’s Mozart-inspired Piano Quartet has been called “an early attempt at symphonic composition in a non-symphonic idiom,” while Faure’s first effort in the same genre was the work that established him as the first great French chamber music composer of the 19th century. And in his Three Madrigals, Czech composer Bohuslav Martin? takes a Renaissance musical form and takes it in a surprising new modernist direction.
