SHADOWLAND BY PILOBOLUS

Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018 · 2:00 PM
Spreckels Theatre

Created by famed dance company Pilobolus, Shadowland tells the story of a teenage girl, longing for independence, who sleeps, only to wake to something incredible lurking behind her bedroom wall – her shadow.  And, she’s off on a journey into Shadowland.  Legendary modern dance is combined with high-energy, fast-paced multimedia, merging front-of-screen choreography with projected images to create a narrative with the fluid logic of a dream, powered by the grace of an acrobatic dance, which evinces surprise and joyous delight in a way that is uniquely Pilobolus.

Shadowland was conceived in collaboration with Steven Banks, lead writer for “SpongeBob SquarePants,” with an original score by composer David Poe.

The Baker-Baum Concert Hall

On the heels of their recent GRAMMY® nomination, The Danish String Quartet, one of the leading quartets of their generation, continues their three-year La Jolla Music Society residency with five concerts from November 16-23, 2019 at The Baker Baum Concert Hall celebrating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. The PRISM Project is a series of musical sets based on the historical and musical impact of Bach’s seminal fugal writing, the final Beethoven string quartets, and compositions which were born out of these fundamentally influential works, including quartets by Shostakovich, Schnittke, Bartók, Mendelssohn, and Webern. The title refers to a beam of music being split through Beethoven’s prism.

PRISM II – BACH, SCHNITTKE, & BEETHOVEN

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2019 · 3 PM

“They could be grounded in their ton or mystical. They allowed time to stand still, and they could assume the pose of excitingly aggressive rockers. They did it all.”

Since their founding in 2012, Malpaso Dance Company has already become one of the most sought-after Cuban dance companies with a growing international profile. This exciting program will feature a new work by acclaimed Swedish choreographer Mats Ek, co-commissioned by The Cleveland Foundation and DANCECleveland, and La Jolla Music Society.

During their week-long residency, Malpaso Dance Company will connect with the San Diego community through special education activities, including open master classes featuring diverse styles from modern dance to Cuban street style.

“…a pinch-me moment, one of those times when you catch an artistic dawning…Malpaso’s dancers were exceptional.”
