SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2019 · 8 PM
The Baker-Baum Concert Hall

On the heels of their recent GRAMMY® nomination, The Danish String Quartet, one of the leading quartets of their generation, continues their three-year La Jolla Music Society residency with five concerts from November 16-23, 2019 at The Baker Baum Concert Hall celebrating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. The PRISM Project is a series of musical sets based on the historical and musical impact of Bach’s seminal fugal writing, the final Beethoven string quartets, and compositions which were born out of these fundamentally influential works, including quartets by Shostakovich, Schnittke, Bartók, Mendelssohn, and Webern. The title refers to a beam of music being split through Beethoven’s prism.

In the fall of 2014, a National Geographic team set out on a harrowing journey to the summit of Burma’s Hkakabo Razi to determine if it is indeed Southeast Asia’s highest point. They didn’t realize that the greatest obstacle wouldn’t be their dwindling rations, the grueling jungle hikes, or the life-threatening hypothermia. It was the force of conflicting personalities that threatened to unravel the entire endeavor. Leader Hilaree Nelson recounts the tough decisions she had to make to keep the team together, accompanied by photographer Cory Richard’s dramatic stills and clips from Renan Ozturk’s searing documentary Down to Nothing.

Ladysmith went on to release over 50 acclaimed records of their own and remains as vibrant, joyous, and powerful as ever.

“It isn’t merely the grace and power of their dancing or the beauty of their singing that rivets the attention, but the sheer joy and love that emanates from their being.”

PROGRAM
It’s not well known that Charlie Chaplin composed almost all of the music in his films. This unique program juxtaposes the music of Chaplin with works by the great composers who influenced him most, including Debussy, Stravinsky, Brahms, and Gershwin. Chaplin’s relationships with these compositional masters is explored through music and story with screen clips of Chaplin’s silent era films, musical accompaniment by Philippe Quint, and rare video footage of Chaplin conducting his orchestras in recording sessions!

“Chaplin’s Smile is overflowing with a very personal brand of joy that Philippe Quint is anxious to share. It’s irresistible.”
– WCRB Boston.

“Quint seems to have struck the perfect balance of finding Chaplin’s robust charm in tracks such as ‘Weeping Willows’ and ‘Tango Bitterness’, while keeping an ever-present romantic tone in this album.”
