On the heels of their recent GRAMMY® nomination, The Danish String Quartet, one of the leading quartets of their generation, continues their three-year La Jolla Music Society residency with five concerts from November 16-23, 2019 at The Baker Baum Concert Hall celebrating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. The PRISM Project is a series of musical sets based on the historical and musical impact of Bach’s seminal fugal writing, the final Beethoven string quartets, and compositions which were born out of these fundamentally influential works, including quartets by Shostakovich, Schnittke, Bartók, Mendelssohn, and Webern. The title refers to a beam of music being split through Beethoven’s prism.

THURSDAY, MARCH 19, 2020 · 8 PM

Bringing innovation to the tap tradition and paving the way for a new generation, Michelle Dorrance, founder and artistic director of Dorrance Dance, is one of the most acclaimed tap dancers and “one of the most imaginative tap choreographers working today” (The New Yorker). SOUNDspace, originally a site-specific work that explored the unique acoustics of New York City’s St. Mark’s Church, grows and adapts in this reinvention for The Baker-Baum Concert Hall. With the myriad sounds and textures of the feet, Ms. Dorrance’s work explores what is most beautiful and exceptional about tap dancing—movement as music.
