Visionary director Doug Fitch helms the West Coast première of Marc Neikrug’s chamber opera, A Song by Mahler, which follows a celebrated concert singer as she develops early onset Alzheimer’s and, with the help of her pianist husband, uses music and singing to confront and cope with their new reality. This production features GRAMMY® Award-winning mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor, clarinetist David Shifrin, FLUX Quartet, and one of the world’s leading baritones, Kelly Markgraf.

These intimate concerts in The JAI will highlight the creativity of Latin GRAMMY® Award-winner and Guggenheim Fellow, Gabriela Lena Frank, as she puts the spotlight on an inspiring array of emerging composers from the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music. GLFCAM, an award-winning non-profit organization founded in 2017, fosters the creative and professional development of emerging composers from around the world through close mentoring and readings with master performers.
GLFCAM is actively engaged in bringing live music to communities with little access to the arts, such as its low-cost Bueno Yabbelow Music Series and its music composition program for disadvantaged public school students in Mendocino County. The Alumni Support Initiative, for composers who complete GLFCAM’s core apprenticeship, funds and stewards professional commissions for alumni with some of the nation’s leading arts groups. To date, nearly two dozen commissions have come to life, including those with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the 45thParallel Chamber Orchestra, and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

GLFCAM, an award-winning non-profit organization founded in 2017, fosters the creative and professional development of emerging composers from around the world through close mentoring and readings with master performers.

GLFCAM is actively engaged in bringing live music to communities with little access to the arts, such as its low-cost Bueno Yabbelow Music Series and its music composition program for disadvantaged public school students in Mendocino County. The Alumni Support Initiative, for composers who complete GLFCAM’s core apprenticeship, funds and stewards professional commissions for alumni with some of the nation’s leading arts groups. To date, nearly two dozen commissions have come to life, including those with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the 45thParallel Chamber Orchestra, and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Spend a short, intimate evening with two masterpieces: Janácek’s String Quartet, which reflects his deep feelings for a woman with whom he exchanged more than 700 love letters, and Franck’s intensely passionate Piano Quintet, which —according to the composer’s wife— was a declaration of love to his pupil.
