Black Grace sweats the mechanics, then feelings kick in

“In the beginning stages of a choreographic work, dancers count.

Two, three, four, step, turn, support a partner’s hipbones and lift, two, three, four and resolve.

But the mechanics of a dance can only become a thing of beauty when the dancers are driven by what they feel within.

Neil Ieremia, artistic director of the New Zealand contemporary dance troupe Black Grace, says it’s a struggle to move past counting to sharing an emotion that resonates, not just among his dancers but to audiences worldwide.”
