Pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard makes connections from Liszt to Messiaen in clever La Jolla Music Society program
Pierre-Laurent Aimard is a giant in interpreting the piano music of our time. His performances of Ligeti, Boulez and Messiaen had the composers’ blessings, but his remarkable piano recital Thursday evening showed a different side.
In his first concert for the La Jolla Music Society, Aimard built a program around Beethoven’s “Hammerklavier Sonata.” Addressing the crowd at the Balboa Theatre before playing, Aimard discussed the challenge of constructing an evening around this formidable piano sonata, calling it a “Mt. Everest of musical history.” (It fittingly was given the entire second half of the concert to itself).
