Violinist Jonathan Ong is a member of the award-winning Verona Quartet, the Graduate Resident String Quartet at The Juilliard School. He has performed around the world in venues such as Wigmore Hall (UK), Shanghai Concert Hall (China), Izumi Hall (Japan), Esplanade Concert Hall (Singapore), Melbourne Recital Hall (Australia) and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Jonathan has been awarded top prizes at numerous international competitions, including the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition; the Osaka, Melbourne and Chesapeake International Chamber Music Competitions; the Fischoff and Coleman National Chamber Music Competitions; the Singapore National Violin Competition, Cynthia Woods Mitchell Young Artists Competition, and most recently the Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition.
In addition to having served as Concertmaster of the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic and Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra for two seasons, Jonathan has also served in as concertmaster of various orchestras at the Music Academy of the West, Aspen Music Festival, and Indiana University. He has performed chamber music with distinguished musicians such as Eric Kim, Jorja Fleezanis, Pedja Muzijevic, Stephen Wyrczynski and Atar Arad. He has recently appeared at festivals such as Music In The Vineyards (Napa Valley, CA), the McGill International String Quartet Academy (Montreal, QC), the Abu Dhabi Chamber Music Festival (Abu Dhabi, UAE) and the Indiana University Summer String Academy (Bloomington, IN). Upcoming appearances include La Jolla Summerfest, the FOCUS! Festival at Juilliard, as well as the ProQuartet Academy in Aix-en-Provence, France.
Jonathan is a graduate of Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, Cleveland Institute of Music, as well as the Eastman School of Music, where he was one of the youngest ever recipients of the Performer’s Certificate. His principal teachers include Alexander Kerr, Paul Kantor, Lynn Blakeslee, Zvi Zeitlin and Lynette Lim, and he studied chamber music with the Pacifica, Ying and Cavani Quartets, as well as Atar Arad and Peter Salaff.
Jonathan has served as Assistant Instructor of Violin at Indiana University, and is currently teaching assistant to the Juilliard String Quartet, along with the other members of his quartet. The Verona Quartet also serves on the chamber music faculty of the Indiana University Summer String Academy.
Jonathan plays on a Joseph Guanerius filius Andreae c. 1686 violin on loan to him by the Rin Foundation, and a French bow on loan from the Juilliard Rare Instrument Collection.
This performance marks Jonathan Ong’s La Jolla Music Society debut.
