Andrew BainAndrew Bain was appointed to the Chair of Principal Horn of the Los Angeles Philharmonic by Gustavo Dudamel in May 2011.

Born and raised in Australia, Andrew comes from a family of four boys, three of whom are musicians. He was first introduced to musical instruments at age 8 when he took up the piano and began voice lessons at age 9. Three years later, he was enrolled at Brighton High School in their special music program. Soon after, he switched to the French horn because he loved the sound. Andrew received a Bachelor in Music from the Elder Conservatorium of Music at the University of Adelaide and furthered his studies with Geoff Collinson in Sydney, Hector MacDonald in Vienna. In 2003 completed a Graduate Diploma in Chamber Music under Will Sanders in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Andrew has had the opportunity to play with some of the finest orchestras around the world. He started as Associate Principal Horn for the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra from 1997-2000. From there he went on to play with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra from 2000-2001 and 2005-2009. He also held positions with the Münchner Symphoniker from 2001-2003 and the Australian Opera & Ballet Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House from 2003-2005. From 2009 to 2012, Andrew was Principal Horn of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and from2003-2012 was the Principal Horn of the Colorado Music Festival. Andrew is a regular soloist having performed concerti with the Melbourne Symphony and Queensland Symphony, Colorado Music Festival, Britten's Serenade with the Music in the Round Festival and Schumann’s Konzertstück at the Colorado Music Festival and with the Colburn Orchestra in Los Angeles. In 2013 Andrew made his Solo debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the baton of Maestro Dudamel.

During 2013, Andrew joined the Berliner Philharmoniker as guest Solo Horn for performances with Simon Rattle, Riccardo Chailly and Gustavo Dudamel. These concerts can be seen at Bain will return for performances with the Berlin Philharmonic in 2014. Also in 2013, Andrew joined the faculty of the Aspen Music Festival and School and the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo Japan, mentoring some of the world’s most talented young horn players.

The 2000 winner of the Marten Bequest Scholarship, Andrew has also performed with the Australian World Orchestra, Saarbrüken Radio Symphony, the Bavarian State Opera, the Malaysian Philharmonic, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Melbourne Chamber Orchestra and the Sydney, West Australian, and Tasmanian symphony orchestras. Andrew is heard on the soundtracks of numerous recordings and films, including Frozen, Anchorman 2, Muppets Most Wanted, The Amazing Spiderman 2, Godzilla, Once Upon a Time, The Wolverine, Pacific Rim, Smurfs 2, Happy Feet, Australia, and Anacondas.

A great lover of Chamber Music Andrew has collaborated with such artists as Martha Argerich, World Brass, New Zealand Symphony Brass and performed in numerous festivals in Australia and the US. He was the guest artist for the 2012 Chamber Music Festival of Lexington directed by LA Phil Associate Concertmaster, Nathan Cole. He is a founding member of the New Sydney Wind Quintet (2004-2010) and has toured with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra throughout Europe.

In addition to performing, Andrew is extremely passionate about teaching. He is committed to the education of young musicians and proud to be the current Horn Professor at the Colburn School Conservatory. Prior to Colburn, Andrew held several teaching positions including Lecturer in Horn at the Australian National Academy of Music, University of Melbourne, Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music and Sydney Conservatorium. He has also given master classes and lectures at the Royal College of Music London, Guildhall School London, Manhattan School of Music, Elder Conservatorium, Queensland Conservatorium, Shanghai Conservatory and Colorado Music Festival.

In 2014, Andrew presented masterclasses at the San Francisco Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, Julliard and the McGill University in Montreal. He also appeared as guest Principal Horn with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Esa Pekka Salonen.

This Summer, Andrew looks forward to presenting recitals and masterclasses in Poland for the Academy Sinfonia Varsovia, touring with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Gustavo Dudamel, performing in the La Jolla Summerfest and returning to teach and perform at the Aspen Music Festival. He will also be performing with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl.

In addition to music, Andrew loves traveling, cooking and exploring LA with his beautiful wife, Rupal. If he’s not working, you will most likely find him on the golf course trying to improve his handicap.
