THREE PIECES AFTER BACH

Brad Mehldau, piano
THURSDAY, MARCH 9, 2017 • 8 PM

MCASD SHERWOOD AUDITORIUM • LA JOLLA
7 PM Pre-Concert Lecture by Steven Cassedy

American Jazz pianist and composer Brad Mehldau makes a welcome addition to the line-up for the La Jolla Music Society’s Piano Series. With a program structured around his own work, Three Pieces After Bach (co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall), Mr. Mehldau juxtaposes several canonical pieces from J.S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier. This innovative exploration balances Mehldau’s own jazz style with the Bach masterpieces – a rarity of expression by this masterful improviser.

OF FROGS AND MEN: THE NATURE OF THE BAROQUE

AKADEMIE FÜR ALTE MUSIK BERLIN
TUESDAY, MARCH 14, 2017 • 7:30 PM

ST. JAMES BY-THE-SEA • LA JOLLA
6:30 PM Pre-Concert Lecture by James Chute
9:30 PM Post-Concert Reception

The Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin is one of the world’s pre-eminent ensembles performing on original instruments. Their program promises to be charming – and highly unusual! Devoted to baroque music centered on nature, it presents pieces compared to animals or birds, such as Telemann’s Violin Concerto in A, “The Frogs,” and Farina’s Capriccio Stravagante whose movements portray such creatures as cats, dogs, and roosters! Also portrayed will be natural events such as a La Tempesta di Mare (storm at sea), depicted by Vivaldi. The program will conclude with Geminiani’s variations on La Follia after Corelli.
