AUDIENCE EDUCATION PROGRAM

OR-108Enhancing the Concert Experience

Musical Preludes

La Jolla Music Society presents a pre-concert activity, the Prelude, before the majority of performances. A devoted following arrives early to each concert to hear musical and historical insights presented by carefully selected scholars, including Professor Steven Cassedy of UCSD and Jazz 88 Program Director Claudia Russell, and musicians from the SummerFest Fellowship Artist Program and the San Diego Youth Symphony.

Coaching Workshops, Open Rehearsals, and Encounters

La Jolla Music Society provides a myriad of opportunities for its audiences to learn directly from artists. Free and open to the public, Coaching Workshops, also a significant element of the Artist Development Program, pair young musicians with some of the most talented performers in the world. These Workshops provide a unique opportunity for the audience to experience the evolution of musical interpretation and performance in an intimate setting. Open Rehearsals are scheduled throughout the winter season and festival and provide the audience with a rare opportunity to observe the intricate rehearsal process before the stage lights shine. These rehearsals reveal the arduous preparation that leads to the spectacular collaboration involved in making music and dance. SummerFest Encounters delve further into specific topics often not directly related to programming. Past Encounters have covered in-depth considerations of music history and theory, roundtable discussions with composers-in-residence, and presentations on developing a successful career in music.
